Behavioral Health Expansion Benefits People of All Ages

The need for behavioral health services has trended upward over the years, especially for youth and those at-risk, which is why Avera is expanding more services.

For the first time, Avera will offer residential addiction care for youth, as well as 24/7 psychiatric urgent care for all ages, by building a new four-story wing at the Avera Behavioral Health Center in Sioux Falls.

The completed project will allow more individuals of all ages to receive inpatient behavioral health care at Avera.

The New Wing at Avera Behavioral Health Center

The new wing will provide:

24/7 psychiatric
urgent care
Residential addiction care for youth
More capacity for children and adolescents
Partial hospitalization space for youth and adults

A Floor-by-Floor Summary

Fourth Floor

  • An additional 14 beds for patients under age 18
  • Eight beds designated for youth residential addiction care — NEW service for Avera

Third Floor

  • Senior behavioral health unit
  • Senior care will now be on-site, moving from the Avera Prince of Peace Retirement Community campus to the new wing 

Second Floor

  • Future adult unit
  • An additional four adult beds available right away
  • Walkway between the new wing and the existing building 

Ground Floor

  • 24/7 psychiatric urgent care — NEW service for Avera
  • Partial hospitalization space for up to 30 adults and 10 youth

Generous Helmsley Trust Support

Avera was awarded $13 million in generous grant funding from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable TrustXổ số Ronglong hàng tuần, including an $8 million grant and $5 million matching portion.

This generous support launches an $18 million comprehensive fundraising campaign by the Avera FoundationXổ số Ronglong hàng tuần, which includes the $13 million in Helmsley funding and an additional $5 million in funds to be raised.

The Helmsley Charitable Trust has partnered with Avera for more than a decade, and has contributed to numerous health programs and facilities.

Our behavioral health services go further with a robust telehealth component through . This service provides chemical dependency evaluations or mental health assessments for students in schools across the region.
